Letter of Self Introduction

Dear Professor Blackstone,

I am taking this opportunity to introduce myself so that you are able to know me better. My name is Chua Jia Hern and I currently study robotics systems engineering in Singapore Institute of Technology. I graduated from Singapore Polytechnic with a diploma in mechanical engineering in 2020. After that, I went to serve National Service and was posted to the Republic of Singapore Navy as a marine systems operator onboard a frigate.

While studying at Singapore Polytechnic, I was introduced to computer programming as it was a subject in the curriculum. That sparked my passion for programming and I applied the knowledge I have learnt in my internship project. My team and I created a program using C++ programming language to keep track of inventory and tool management, allowing data to be stored by scanning barcodes. Due to my interest in programming and my technical knowledge of mechanical engineering, I wanted to study in a university course where I could apply and develop these skills. Robotics systems engineering is a splendid example of a course where I could achieve that. This is because both hardware and software are integrated together to achieve an end goal.

Other than having sufficient knowledge of robotics systems, another crucial skill set to have is the ability to be an effective communicator who can apply critical thinking adeptly. Therefore, my aim for this module is to be able to understand how we can apply critical thinking to our communication, be it through a written letter or a verbal presentation. Moreover, I hope to learn to be more expressive during speeches or presentations. This is because I tend to speak in a dull tone, which would make it seem that I am not speaking clearly, thus resulting in the audience not being able to understand what I am saying and also giving the perception that I am not interested in presenting well.

However, I am confident in writing reports as I have written such reports during my studies in Singapore Polytechnic. I believe that my prior experience and knowledge will benefit me. In addition, I am confident in utilizing proper grammar and language to construct well-thought-out sentences.

In conclusion, I believe that I will be able to learn how to apply critical thinking to communicate effectively and become more expressive in presenting at the end of this module. I look forward to learning from you.

Yours Sincerely,

Chua Jia Hern
